Edward Lear (1812-1888) was a renowned British artist and poet most famous for his humorous nonsense verses and the illustrations he created to accompany them. He was born in Kent, England, and is most prominently known as a “man of letters.” He was a prolific creative force and produced over 500 oil paintings and over 1800 pen and watercolors.

Though his works span a variety of genres, notably landscape, topography, and alpine views, he is probably best known for his illustrations of animals and birds. He was also well known for his travels throughout Europe, both for the purpose of creating artwork and for pleasure. Edward Lear's Most Famous Works
