Earrings are definitely having a moment right now. After a long era in the shadow of rings and necklaces, ear jewellery has come out swinging - or, ahem, dangling. Now they’re the centrepiece of your favourite Insta influencer’s outfit, providing the perfect cinch to the most fashion-forward get-up. If you get into the earring habit, you’ll soon start to feel naked leaving the house without some bling in your ears.
We’ve got hoops big and small, chandeliers for special functions, cuffs, climbers - basically, everything you need to keep those flappers looking fresh. Browse our covetable collection, pick up a few of your faves, and prepare for the inevitable ‘Where did you get those?’ question.
Ok, now the important part: how do you pick the right earrings for your style, wardrobe, and face shape? So much to consider, it’s easy to get a bit of a head spin. But don’t sweat: it’s simple. Here are a few of our best tips.
Take a look at your face. What do you see (other than a gorge queen, duh)? Is your face shape oval, long, round, square, heart, or diamond? Oval faces tends to be, er, oval in shape, kind of like an egg. Long faces don’t have much width, with sides that continue on a flat plane. Round faces tend to have fuller cheeks with an all-around circular form, while square faces have foreheads and jawlines of similar length. Diamonds have foreheads and jaws that are narrower than the cheekbones - not to be confused with hearts, which have cheeks wider than their foreheads, and a narrow chin a the bottom.
Oval faces look best with chunky, dangly earrings that are fuller at the bottom, which help to fill out the bottom of your face. For long faces, it’s all about volume - go for broad earrings to add a bit of width to your face shape. Round faces need something to elongate their shape - which means long, thin shapes or drop earrings. Diamonds look good with shapely, long earrings that draw attention to the mouth, while hearts should go for earrings that fall just above the chin to widen the lower part of their face.
If you’re looking for earrings to compliment an outfit, firstly consider the occasion. We know it sounds obvious, but think about whether the event you’re going to is more black tie or laid back, and then choose your jewellery accordingly. For nicer events, forgo plastic earrings in favour of something more elegant - maybe a simple gold hoop, or jewel-encrusted dangle earrings. If it’s more caj, you can get creative - go for a showstopping geometric number, or some colourful, chunky-cool pieces.
Thinking about colour is important, too. If you’re wearing more jewellery, it’s easiest to just sport silver or gold; but mixing metals can be a bold look, you just have to do it carefully. Make sure you have 50/50 gold and silver, and make sure they’re evenly dispersed on your body, so that they look intentionally mixed rather than haphazard.
Now, consider your outfit - is it vintage-inspired? Trendy and fashion-forward? Minimalist and understated? The vibe of your jewellery should reflect the vibe of your clothes, so go for something that feels like it compliments your sartorial story - that said, if your outfit is really bold, you may want to slap on some more muted earrings to balance it out.
You should also choose jewellery that goes with the colour palette of your clothes - so if you’re in earthy tones, try gold hoops or emerald studs. If you’re in airy, summery clothes, cool-coloured jewellery - like silver or blue gemstones - look best. You can also go the other way, matching cool-coloured clothes with warm jewellery, or vice-versa - pairing colours with their opposite tonal family can actually balance your outfit nicely.
Whatever you do, just have fun with it. We’ve given you some guidelines, but rules were made to be broken - so just choose with your heart. If something grabs you, go for it! Earrings are an investment, and you want something that makes you smile every time you see it. Ignore trends - just zone in on your gut instinct, and you’ll always choose right.
