How Do I Match My Furniture?

No one wants clashing furniture - your home is meant to be a tranquil haven to unwind or a cosy snug to laze around in when you’re hungover. Save yourself the headache and make sure your furniture fits together beautifully. There’s all sorts of styles and designs out there, so doing this may seem a little daunting. But don’t fret - your good friends at Fy are here to give you the low-down with these basic rules.

Number 1: suss out your style. Do you like wood-burning fires, raw wood and exposed stone? Then you’re probs a rustic aesthetic type so keep to warm neutral tones, with as many natural materials as you can get your paws on. Or, if you’re totally turned on by clean lines, sculptural details, and open, airy spaces then you’re deffo a wannabe Scandi. On the other end of the spectrum, if you’re a firm believer that more is more with a bedroom covered in wall hangings and fairy lights, then Bohemian furnishings should be your go to.

Once you’ve nailed down your style, match your furniture accordingly. For rustic dreamers go for Indian Hub’s exposed wood Shish study desk to help make admin days that little bit more bearable. Whereas Royal Dream’s New Zealand sheepskin stool in light brown is a *must* for bohemian bedrooms (think: stacks of magazines sitting on top, or a funky table lamp spotlighting a mirror). The knack here is to make sure you keep these colour schemes and decor palettes in line - if you’ve done that then you can’t go wrong, trust us. That being said, it can also look really cute when you mix and match the odd bit of furniture. For example, the industrial aesthetic can sometimes be complemented by some Scandi bits, whilst rustic and bohemian can look lovely together when done properly.

What Furniture do I Need in What Room?

This is another thing that at the heart of it, really depends on your personal preference. But, saying that, there are a few essential bits and bobs that you we recommend having in certain rooms.

A living room absolutely must have comfy perching spots. This means a living room must absolutely have a selection of luxurious chairs with optimal padding. Sternzeit Design’s Supernova Chair in ice grey velvet fits the bill, so too does their apple green, velvet Retrostar Rocker, which is giving us serious Grandad steeze. Coffee tables are also pretty useful here, as leaving hot cuppas on the floor is a disaster waiting to happen. Indian Hub have a pretty nifty 3 piece set of wooden reed tables that range in size (and pull out from under the largest one - handy for pokey apartments lacking in space), whilst their ago wood cart coffee table is a fabulous centrepiece.

As for a kitchen, it’s all about making sure your pots and pans and other culinary knick-knacks are put away nicely. This calls for an abundance of shelving and storage. We personally recommend Pellington Design’s C11 Confetti shelf system ‘cos we think tiles look amazing in kitchens, and the neutral grey and white colour scheme goes with pretty much everything. Then again, for something a bit more kooky, go for their 70s multi-coloured version - now that’s a statement piece.

As for a bedroom, it’s all about creating a warm, fuzzy ambience that will help you catch those Zzzs. We really love Royal Dream’s furry sheepskin stools (yes, that’s why we’ve mentioned it twice), and think it would be an excellent addition to a bedroom. Coming in a range of colours, from purple, cow print (yum) and grey, you can’t go wrong with one of these. That being said, lighting is super important in bedrooms, so make sure you nab yourself an easy on the eyes nightstand lamp.

Last up, your office. Whilst not everyone’s got one, a lot of people have at least an area of their adobe where they do some admin bits from time to time. In this area a sturdy desk is a must.
