Originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869, Louisa May Alcott's novel about four sisters coming of age in the Civil War era has become a classic. Over 150 years later it is capturing another generation of readers, thanks in part to a recent adaptation from director Greta Gerwig.

"If one girl likes another, she gives her a lime; if she's mad with her, she eats one before her face, and doesn't offer even a suck". It is intriguing to think of limes as a social metaphor for status and acceptance.

The novel offers a rather unusual perspective - not all of it is about falling in love. The author tells a story about the ability to dream, and the importance of supporting each other. It seems like this book is a perfect read growing up. Louisa May Alcott wrote the book at the request of her publisher. Little Women was an immediate commercial and critical success.
