Right from the first taxiing of the plane to the runway Concorde was never just about getting from A to B in the fastest possible time. The enigma of that silhouette and the possibilities of the luxury associated with it have been explored by cultural commentators before and also by Wolfgang Tilmans in his iconic body of work on the plane in flight. Flying on Concorde was maybe not as glamorous as myth has had us believe; the seating wasn't particularly generous and the idea of a luxury interior has lost translation over time. But the idea of Concorde was something that everyone got on board with and it was used by other brands as a signifier of status including Rolex and Olympus.

2019 marks 50 years since the first successful test flight of the plane. The author flew on the plane once and describes the flying experience as akin to being on a fighter jet - with a hundred other people. Associated with the plane were lots of additional ephemera that has grown to hold a cultural, and financial, value. Everything from the photography, typography and graphic language was calibrated to "excite and aura of speed, glamour, and progress. Concorde was the promise fo tomorrow delivered in the here and now."
