Cowboy - Richard Prince

The American artists Richard Prince has made work that features the Cowboy for almost all of his career. The trope of the Western cowboy is central to the American narrative in art and Richard Prince's work around this figure is a continuation of this tradition. His works channel the sublime rugged beauty of cowboys in nature and also critique the centuries-old media-fed mythology which is fragile and frayed like the fringing on a jacket. Prince's work also references the way in which the image of the cowboy has been appropriated by advertising for companies such as Marlboro.

As well as featuring plates of his work the book also contains quotes from Prince about his subject.

"Looking back on the more than forty years during which I have been involved as a writer with the American cowboy, I wonder if part of what kept me interested was the tragedy, the inherent mismatching of beast and place, which was always woven into it."

The book is also a stylistic triumph; it is a softback but contains two different finishes of paper, with a gloss at the start and end and matt paper in the central bulk of the book, it is also printed on the edge of the papers so that it you can read Cowboy at the top and bottom edges and Richard Prince across the long edge.
