Cecil Beaton's Bright Young Things - Robin Muir

This book is published to mark the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery which opened in March 2020. The book and exhibition is an exploration of the group of young 20th Century aesthetes who were known as the Bright Young Things and whose lives were photographed by Cecil Beaton. The group found wider public attention came in 1927 when a gathering of the group on July 19th prompted the Daily Express to speculate "Who, then, it is natural to ask, are the Bright Young Things?"

The interest in them was partly down to their fondness for dressing up but also because many of their members were from the aristocracy. Stephen Tennant was one of the core members of the tribe and Edith and Osbert Sitwell, Anne Armstrong-Jones, Daphne Du Maurier were also on the fringes of the group.

Beaton documented many of the group and the parties that they threw and attended and his own house, Ashcombe, was one of the main nexuses for the group.
