This is the second edition of this book by Martin Salisbury and Morag Styles; the first edition was published in 2012 and has subsequently been reprinted 4 times. The authors note that since the first edition the children's picturebook has grown as an art form and there has also been much change to the children's publishing industry. The production quality has soared and there has been a marked increase in the willingness of the industry to use embossing, debossing, spot lamination and different paper stocks in order to achieve the goals of the authors and illustrators.

The book starts with an introduction to the history of the picture book and then proceeds to examine the art of the picture book and the relationship between the child reader and the book and what is defined, or accepted, as suitable for children. It concludes by examining the children's book industry.
