Eric Ravilious was an English painter and illustrator, who is known for his evocative paintings of the British country side. Ravilious was born in London in 1903, and started his artistic studies at the Eastbourne School of Art before going on to the Royal College of Art. During his career, Ravilious illustrated several books, including Four Hedges by Muirhead Bone, The Pottery of High Ham, and A Canterbury Pilgrimage, as well as producing freelance illustrations for the book firm of Country Life.
Ravilious’s most famous work, ‘High Cross’, was created in 1939, and is an iconic image of the English landscape. The painting depicts an expansive landscape, with a cross surrounded by flowering meadows.
