When it comes to rugs, you’re usually looking to match them with your existing design. And of course, color is important. Luckily wool looks amazing in just about any tone and is durable enough to stay vibrant for many years.

But another factor that you might not normally consider is shape. Because wool is so versatile these rugs can take any number of shapes: square and rectangular, circular, or something a little more unusual, like a sheepskin rug. First of all, there’s a few myths floating around, like that you shouldn’t use circular rugs outside of smaller rooms, but it is really more important to match the shape to the style of the room. For instance, if you have a room with a lot of modern, organic-shaped furniture, a circular rug is the perfect accompaniment, especially with a natural fabric like wool. Try hanging a similarly circular chandelier to complete the look. On the other hand, a rectangular rug is a great choice in the dining room where you likely already have a longer rectangular table. Plus there’s something really lux about having your guests tuck themselves in for dinner over a soft, lush wool.

Finally, you have the rebel rugs, which don’t conform to our simple notions about geometry. Slightly oblong wool rugs or sheepskin rugs are great as focal points in any room. They’re that extra something, the diamond stud earrings, that really push a room over the top into “Wow!” territory. It doesn’t hurt to place an abstract print or sculpture nearby to really amplify this effect.
