There are many different types of drinking vessels, accommodating everything from cocktails, coffee, teas, beer and wine, as well as water and juices. The first thing you need to consider to is whether the liquids they will be holding are hot or cold.
Hot drinks like coffees and teas need to be held in insulated materials with handles for you to hold (so that you don’t burn yourself). Cold beverages such as water and wine on the other hand are generally held in glass or plastic.
For hot drinks like tea and coffee, your go to is an insulated mug like Pantone’s porcelain espresso cups featuring their range of pastel tones. The whimsical colour scheme is just the thing to wake up to, or to help you relax in bed with a soothing herbal tea after a long and hard day.
We’re also big fans of Vialli Design’s ingenious Amo Tea Cup, which features an innovative design that keeps drinks at proper serving temperature (super handy for those who have a tendency to forget about their tea… only to find it lukewarm). Also, special shoutouts should go to Vialli Design’s Amo latte glasses, great for the latte drinkers among you.
Now, to delve into cold drinks and the right drinkware for them we need to separate them. For alcoholic beverages like wine, the obvious choice here is the wine glass but there are some important things to note here. Red wine glasses usually have a wide base and some come without stems so that the warm of your hand releases aromas from the wine. On the other hand, white wine glasses generally have larger stems and a narrow mouth to keep the wine at a cool temperature.
If you’re a ‘popping bottles’ kind of person, then you must invest in champagne flutes. These differ to wine glasses as they more elongated to allow for the bubbles to rise up. It’s important to invest in a good pair of champagne flutes if you drink lots of prosecco and champagne as typical wine glasses won’t keep them bubbly for as long.
Beer is also a beverage that must be given proper glassware, ’cos there’s nothing worst than lukewarm beer. Beer is drinking in larger quantities than wine, so make sure you beer glass reflects that. Pilsner glasses and other pint glasses are your typical goes to here.
As for water and other non-alcoholic beverages like juice and smoothies, you’ve got a lot of free reign here. Whether you want glass or plastic, stem or cup, it doesn’t really matter here - so let your imagination run wild.
First off, in order to match your drinkware to your aesthetic you need to decipher what exactly makes you tick. Are you into industrial trimmings? Or do you go crazy for a minimalist colour palette? What are your feelings towards exposed wood? If just the mention of it makes your heart swoon then you most probably are into rustic designs.
All of these are the important questions you have to ask yourself, and the answers to them play an important part in figuring out what makes you tick.
If you’ve got a sweet tooth for the kitsch, bohemian aesthetic, then you’ll definitely fall in love with Camilla Engdahl’s ‘Little Rose’ ceramic pot with a charming green, red and blue colour scheme and cute animal cartoon face.
Or, if you’re after the minimalistic (but still playful) design, then Camilla Engdahl’s ‘Hugo’ black and white ceramic pot will surely make your head spin. Or, if you’re after something even more minimalistic, then Umbra’s elegant white teapot with infuser will be just the thing for you.
The industrial aesthetic sits right at the intersection of minimalism and urban grit, and if that’s also where you sit, then Namuos’ stoneware cup and saucer in a matte grey finish will be right up your street. That, or Return To Sender’s two colour cups made by mostly female artisans of a family company in northern Thailand. The porcelain cups feature a concrete effect finish with a dark blue lining which would look great in a converted loft space.
There are also many drinkware bits here that would suit any aesthetic, from Vialli Design’s clear Cristallo coffee cups, or their Cristallo whisky cups. So load up on these gorgeous, elegant designs and rest assured you will love them no matter what experimental phase you go through.
Oh, and make sure you pop Vialli Design’s set of four Amo Water glasses into your basket too, as it’s important to stay hydrated! Drink at least 8 glasses of these full of a water a day and we promise you you’re whole body will thank you.
