Made from wood and ethically sourced animal bones that would have otherwise been discarded.
Story Behind the Art: The bone is "batiked" which is an age-old art process used in Africa. The patterns are applied by placing wax on the white bone and dipping the bone into a dark brown/black dye, resulting in beautiful African mud cloth designs.
Meet the Carvers of the Kamba Tribe who reside in Machakos, Kenya. The economically disadvantaged group continues the tradition of wood and bone carving that has been a part of the tribe for generations. They are paid fair wages for these beautiful pieces that support their families and community. There is a large population of orphans within the tribe and as a community, they support the children. The craftspeople are educated on the need for reforestation to honor the land and plant seeds in the rainy season. This will create a sustainable income for future generations to come.
